How to Get Extended School Year for Your Child in Special Education
If you are the parent of a child with a disability that you think your child needs an education program during the summer? It cuts to long causing your child with emotional disorders to regress in behavior? This article will discuss the definition of this “Year (ESA) and the services your child may be eligible. Extended School Year is a term to describe any type of special education and related services that are provided outside the regular school year. School districts are required under the Individuals with Disabilities (IDEA), the provision of additional school year if the child needs to receive a free appropriate public education. There have been relatively few court cases about the ESA, and letters policy of the State Board of Education and the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). On February 4, 2003 OSEP issued a policy letter stating that “a public agency in May limited to the complementary services of the school year to particular categories of disability or unilaterally limit the type, amount or duration of those services.” ESA should provide the child at no cost to parents. They may receive education services (reading, math, written language), self-help skills, functional skills to help them become independent, critical thinking skills of life, behavioral interventions, related services (occupational therapy language, physiotherapy). The list can go on and on. Using items like embroidered patches can be great help to promote such noble services for special education kids as it may attract more bodies and donations from large corporation to improve. You should be aware that your child should need ESY to receive FAPE. School districts are expected to raise ESY parents as soon as possible, so that disagreements can be resolved in the due process hearing. I think that school districts rarely in place, unless a parent insists. Ensure that the annual review of your child’s ESY discussed. By understanding what ESY and how your child can receive will help advocate for needed services for their child.
