Northwest science and technology have led many advanced scientific advances as the first aircraft from Britain, the birth of the first test tube baby, splitting the atom, and the first computer in the world. In 2005, the Department of Trade and Industry announced that under the Technology Program, one of the 19 networks for transfer of new knowledge (KTNs) is the chemical in the northwest. Share KTNs help knowledge and research among businesses, academic institutions such as universities and trade associations.
4. North West Cumbria, in particular, is widely recognized as the center of British industry of nuclear energy, and is home to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
