Northwest science and technology have led many advanced scientific advances as the first aircraft from Britain, the birth of the first test tube baby, splitting the atom, and the first computer in the world. In 2005, the Department of Trade and Industry announced that under the Technology Program, one of the 19 networks for transfer of new knowledge (KTNs) is the chemical in the northwest.
